GMC Sonoma key fob battery

8 of the 9 model years listed for the GMC Sonoma have a proven battery. The most common answer is CR2032. Rows below run oldest to newest; a year can appear twice when the car came with more than one kind of key.

Changing the battery

Separate remote fob

  1. A separate fob has no key blade inside, so it opens with nothing but a coin or a small screwdriver.
  2. Find the slot along the edge and turn a coin in it. Go slowly so the clips do not snap.
  3. Lift the old coin cell out and press the new one in with matching orientation.
  4. Reassemble and test from a short distance.

This key takes two CR2016 cells. Change both at the same time and stack them the way the old pair sat; mixing a fresh cell with a tired one shortens the life of the new one.

A CR2032 is 20 mm across and 3.2 mm thick. CR2032, CR2025 and CR2016 share the same width but not the same thickness, so a swap between them can leave a loose contact or a case that will not close.

If a child might have swallowed a coin cell, treat it as an emergency and get to a hospital right away.
